What does patriotism look like when it becomes a responsibility?
Patriotism is a 2022 awareness campaign by Public Matters Lebanon, directed by Nassif Al Rayess, with content created by Julie K. BouChakra and executive production by Mohd Ataya.
The film approached patriotism not as a slogan, but as a question about responsibility, participation and the choices people make toward the country they belong to.
A civic idea becomes stronger when people can question it, not just repeat it.
A civic message, directed as a film.
The challenge was to give an abstract idea a human shape. Rather than lecture the audience, the film used people, spaces and gestures to make the message feel immediate.
Production included filming connected to the Lebanese Army / Military Academy, bringing the campaign into a highly structured environment while keeping the visual language contemporary and personal.
One idea carried from set to final cut.
The production brought together Public Matters Lebanon, cinematographer Alain Donio and a wider creative team, with Nassif also handling editing and post-production.
Keeping direction and post close together helped the same intention survive from performance and framing into rhythm, structure and final delivery.
Part of a longer public-interest collaboration.
Patriotism sits within a broader collaboration with Public Matters Lebanon across civic engagement, awareness and public-interest communication.
For Spred, that work continues to matter because strategy and humanity do not have to sit on opposite sides of a campaign. A message can be clear, useful and purposeful while still being treated with cinematic care.
Communication can carry a point of view without losing the people inside it.
